The location of the district of Hajnówka

The Hajnowian district is a south-eastern part of Podlaskie Voivodship – extremely picturesque range of the ecologically healthiest region of "Zielone Płuca Polski" ("Poland's Green Lungs"). This region is located on Bielska Plain which is part of lowland of northern Podlasie.

 

At districts territory there are several water basins: Siemianówka (one of the biggest artificial water basins, located on the Narewka river in Narewka commune, a perfect place for fishing and watching wild birds), Topiło (ponds in the middle of the forest), Repczyce (a water basin located on the Nurzec river in Kleszczele commune) and Bachmaty (resultant on the Orlanka river in Dubicze Cerkiewne commune). These are the excellent places for fishing and water sports. The river valleys of Narew and Narewka offer their treasures to nature lovers, anglers and ornithologists.

The history

The region of Puszcza Białowieska (virgin forest) was a royal property, and that is why it was very well protected. The forest belonged to ruthenian and lithuanian dukes, and after Zygmunt Augusts death to the polish kings. On the forests territory there are many settlements dated on the XIII century and also burial mounds (IV and V century). It was a place of hunt for dukes, kings, tsars and a place of historical events at the same time. The hunt's marks are for example a boulder in the Palace Park,obelisk, as well as many objects in Białowieża (including so called Stara Białowieża).

 

The most historical attractions are in Białowieża and Kleszczele. Other interesting places are: Dubicze Cerkiewne, Czyże, Klejniki, Masiewo, Narew, Narewka, Orzeszkowo, Szczyty-Dzięciołowo and Werstok.

District's general description

The general district's area is 1624 km2, from which 1/3 of the district's territory is covered by Białowieska Puszcza. In it's borders there are 2 cities (Hajnówka and Kleszczele) and 9 communes: Białowieża, Czeremcha, Czyże, Dubicze Cerkiewne, Hajnówka, Hajnówka-city, Kleszczele-city and commune, Narew and Narewka.

 

In the district of Hajnówka (information from 31.12.2009) lived 46787people, from which lived in the cities (Hajnówka and Kleszczele) about 48,1 %. In Hajnówka there are about 22,5 thousands of inhabitants – that is 45,1% of district's population. The forests occupy 49,9% of the district of Hajnówka. The main forest complex is Puszcza Białowieska – the Europe's best preserved lowland forest in leafy forests area. In the district, there are 19 primary schools, 11 gymnasiums (middle school), and 8 high schools. Moreover, in Hajnówka there was created a Non-resident Department of Politechnika Białostocka.

Tourist attractions (natural and cultural)

Puszcza Białowieska together with Białowieski National Park are the last places of existance for natural lowland forests and are the kingdom of the Europe's biggest mammal: Bison(Wisent).

The area of primeval forest is 150 thousand ha, from which 62,5 thousand ha are located in Poland and 166,7 thousand ha in Republic of Belorussia. In polish part of forest there is Białowieski National park as well as three forestry offices: Białowieża, Browsk, Hajnówka. The national park's area is 10,5 thousand ha, and 4,747 thousand ha are under special protection. The forestry offices are the part of promotional complex called "Lasy Puszczy Białowieskiej".

Most popular are among the tourists are the objects of Białowieski National Park, for example: Forestry-Natural Museum in Białowieża, the reserve of Bisons, the palace park, the area of special protection, and area of protection "Hwoźna".

There are 9 marked educational paths in hajnowian district, which are 47 km long,and 15 tourist paths of total lenght of 404 km (including 3 bicycle paths in communes: Narewka, Hajnówka and Dubicze Cerkiewne, which are 182 km long). Additionally, an autopath (about 90 km long) was created. It's not marked yet, but there is a brochure at your disposal. An unusual attraction is the ride on narrow-gauge railway(group rides) to Topiło, a settlement in the middle of the forest, where You can walk for a while and have a rest by the campfire.

Another attraction is local architecture, both sacral building and monuments of wooden architecture. There can be an interesting and unusual addition to tourist offer. The Centre and Museum of Belorussian Culture in Hajnówka has a rich collection connected with cultural legacy of this region. You also may be interested in open-air ethnographic museums and it's exhibits ("Sioło Budy" in Budy, "Chata Stefana" in Nowe Berezowo, "Ethnographic Museum of Wooden Architecture of Russian Population of Podlasie", moreover, worth seeing is also so called "Land of open shutters", which means three unique villages: Trześcianka, Puchły and Soce.

The accomodation system consists of many objects of different standards. The hotels with high quality of service are great place for conferences. Houses and leisure centres offer the stay for children and young people, while rural tourism lovers can enjoy their stay with their families in private houses. We highly recommend you to book the rooms before the tourist season. There are 70 tourist objects in our district that have 1500 accomodation places (above 400 places are in about 50 private rural tourist houses). Here, since ages, together live different nationalities and confessions. Belorussian, polish and ukranian culture created an unusual composition. Old folk customs, church holidays, and above all specific dialekt are very characteristic of this place. Also catholic and orthodox religions played an extremely important part in forming today's society. Many events, which essence is folklore, enable You to feel the unique spirit of this place.

The biggest international event in the district is "International Festival Hajnowian Days of Orthodox Music". It takes place every year in may in Sain'ts Trinity orthodox church. Other events are:
